Eugenie Bouchard Rejoins Team Canada For The Billie Jean King Cup Finals As Bianca Andreescu Is Absent

Eugenie Bouchard is set to once again don the Canadian colors on the international stage, having been named as part of Team Canada for the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup finals.

Teaming up with Bouchard in the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup squad are some other prominent Canadian tennis talents, including Leylah Fernandez, the recently crowned US Open doubles champion Gabriela Dabrowski, Rebecca Marino, and Marina Stakusic. The prestigious Billie Jean King Cup finals are scheduled to take place at the Estadio de la Cartuja in Seville, Spain, from November 7 to 12.

This marks Eugenie Bouchard’s return to the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time since 2018, having previously participated in a total of 10 matches within the tournament.

Notably, Canada’s most recent singles Grand Slam champion, Bianca Andreescu, will not be part of the action in Seville. The 23-year-old Canadian tennis sensation last competed at the Canadian Open in August, where she faced a first-round defeat against Camila Giorgi. Subsequently, she withdrew from the US Open due to a stress fracture in her back.

In the Billie Jean King Cup finals, Team Canada finds itself placed in Group C. Their opening clash is against the host nation, Spain, which features Paula Badosa, Sara Sorribes Tormo, Rebeka Masarova, Cristina Bucsa, and Marina Bassols Ribera. This encounter is scheduled for November 8.

Following that, Canada’s second group match will be against Poland on November 10. Poland, while missing their star player Iga Swiatek, will still have a competitive lineup, including Magda Linette, Magda Frech, Katarzyna Kawa, and Weronika Falkowska.

At the WTA 1000 Madrid Open, Bouchard, as a qualifier, managed a victory against Dayana Yastremska in the first round, before bowing out to Martina Trevisan in the second. In May, she reached the quarterfinals of the Challenger tournament in Florence, Italy.

Subsequently, at the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open, Bouchard received a main draw wildcard and clinched a straight-set win over Renata Zarazua but fell to the No. 7 seed, Veronika Kudermetova, in a tightly contested three-setter during the second round.

In her quest at the Grand Slam level, Bouchard faced challenges in the qualification rounds. Her most recent Grand Slam participation was at the 2020 French Open, where she advanced to the third round. While Eugenie Bouchard has been a former World No. 5, her current ranking positions her at World No. 232.
